The nephrology fellowship is a 2 year subspecialty program.
The two-year fellowship will provide training in medical nephrology encompassing hospital and clinic based care, as well as Interpretation of renal biopsy. Development of these skills will allow the Nephrology fellow to diagnose renal disease with all of its complications as well as the systematic approach to hypertension and to devise appropriate therapeutic options. The fellowship will also allow time for research, either laboratory or clinical.
After completion of the two-year fellowship, the Nephrologist should have a broad understanding of basic renal physiology, the natural history of renal disease and hypertension, and medical and surgical therapies for the renal patient. In addition to the above the nephrologist will be versed in all forms of dialytic therapy including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, Continuous Veno-Venous Hemodialysis (CVVHD), and hemofiltration. All avenues of dialysis will be explored and this will also encompass access insertion including femoral venous and arterial catheterization, Internal jugular and subclavian venous catheterization, and acute peritoneal dialysis catheter insertion.
In addition to responsibilities as the nephrology fellow, the fellow will have the responsibility of training other members of the Grandview Hospital house staff including students, interns and residents. The fellow will also present a Nephrology conference with an attending nephrologist present as moderator.
Pre-requisites for the Nephrology Fellow:
- One year of an AOA approved internship
- Two years of an AOA approved residency in Internal Medicine.
- Approval by the Board of Trustees at Grandview Hospital.
- Membership in the AOA throughout the Fellowship.
- The second year of the training program is dependent on the satisfactory completion of the first year of training.
